About ABB-CCRI

Community knowledge. Rigorous research. Practical innovation.

Agenda Beyond Borders Centre for Community Research & Innovation (ABB-CCRI) is a community-rooted research and innovation platform. We connect communities, researchers and institutions to generate evidence, understand environmental and livelihood change, test practical innovations, strengthen local research capacity and translate knowledge into action.

Our Research Pillars

Four connected areas of research and innovation

Wetland biodiversity

Nature-Based Solutions, Biodiversity & Ecosystem Restoration

Researching ecosystem restoration, biodiversity, landscape stewardship and nature-positive solutions with communities.

Climate-smart agriculture

Climate-Smart Agriculture & Resilient Food Systems

Understanding climate-smart livelihoods, farmer adoption, resilient production, food systems and nutrition security.

Water research

Water, Wetlands & Landscape Resilience

Generating evidence on water resources, wetlands, catchments, climate risk and the health of connected landscapes.

Circular economy

Blue & Circular Economy, Green Livelihoods & Innovation

Researching fisheries, waste, circular solutions, green enterprise and inclusive livelihood innovation.

Our Research Platforms

Infrastructure for evidence, experimentation and learning

Community Evidence Observatory

A longitudinal research platform linking community observations, environmental and livelihood data, spatial analysis and specialist scientific validation.

Innovation & Adoption Lab

Testing what works, why it works, for whom and under what conditions — with particular attention to community adoption and sustainability.

Thematic Research Labs

Focused research initiatives across nature, food systems, water, circular economy and livelihoods, developed with specialist partners.

Where our research begins

Start locally. Generate evidence with wider relevance.

Our first demonstration landscape is the Lake Victoria Basin in Kenya. It provides an important setting for building and testing community-driven research models while addressing interconnected questions around ecosystems, agriculture, water, fisheries and livelihoods.

Lake Victoria is a starting geography — not ABB-CCRI's geographic boundary.
